Clear Chromate [MIL-DTL-5541]

Clear Chromate refers to a chemical conversion coating, often specified by MIL-DTL-5541, for aluminum and aluminum alloys. When specifying the finish, we typically ask for “type” and “class” if you coating to MIL-DTL-5541.

Types:

• Type 1: Contains hexavalent chromium. The resulting film may appear gold or brown, but it can also be specified as having no color (referred to as “clear”).
  
  
• Type 2: Contains no hexavalent chromium. The film typically has no color (also described as “clear”).

Classes:

• Class 1A: Provides maximum corrosion protection, suitable as a final finish or pre-treatment for paint or powder coating.
